Firstly, we all should understand about obesity. Obesity is a medical state of being overweight and results from excessive consumption of calories above the body limit. World Health Organization (WHO) defines an individual with BMI (Body Mass Index) of 25 or more is regarded as overweight. On the other hand, an individual with a BMI of 30 or more is regarded as obese. BMI includes a person’s age, height and weight.

Now you must be thinking what causes obesity among individuals. Causes are as follows:

  • Family history and genetic
  • Alcoholism
  • Smoke cessation
  • Lack of energy balance
  • Consumption of drugs or specific medicines
  • Emotional factors
  • Endocrine: PCOS, hypothyroidism and crushing syndrome (high cortisol levels due to intake of steroids drugs)
  • Pregnancy
  • Lack of sleep
  • Inappropriate work schedules and many more

National Health Service in the United Kingdom says that there are 6 clusters of obese individuals:

  1. Young healthy females – women who are obese but with less obese related health problems, such as type 2 diabetes
  2. Heavy drinking males – men with high amount of alcohol intake
  3. Poor mental health – this lead women to gain weight unnecessarily due to poor mental well-being
  4. Affluent and healthy elderly – good healthy but unhealthy lifestyle leads to obesity. Such as, alcohol, drugs and high blood pressure
  5. Physically sick and happy elderly – elderly people with chronic disease like, arthritis but have good mental well-being
  6. People with poor health conditions – they suffer a lot due to poor financial status and have huge number of chronic diseases.

So people have a lot of concerns about preventing obesity. One of the best methods is to eat food in a limited amount. Dr Mark Hyman says, overeating leads to overweight, that leads to obesity and unhealthy life. That\’s how unknowingly we invite so many diseases. Overweight, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, hypothyroidism, and so on.

The latest statistics from the National Centre for Health Statistics found that, in the last 2 decades, over 100 million people were found obese. Among children, 18% are obese ageing between 6 and 11, whereas teens are 21% obese ageing between 12- 19. We are standing at an alarming point and should control our eating habits now itself to lead a healthy life. Alter your diet for a good reason and future.
