10 Myths and Facts about Vegan Lifestyle

Before I turned vegan in October 2019, I made sure to do tons of research about the nutrition intake and the long-term benefits. I am not a firm believer of some crazy diets. I prefer to eat healthy and clean food. So, I thought of debunking some of the myths about vegan lifestyle by presenting some facts.

1.     Myth — Vegans don’t get enough protein from plants.
Fact — Plant-based diet has rich protein in legumes, plant milk, nuts and seeds.

2.     Myth — Vegan diet is expensive and fancy.
Fact — Vegan diet is neither expensive nor fancy. You can cook simple vegetables, whole grains and fruits at home. It’s easy to cook and light on your pocket.

3.     Myth — Vegans can’t build muscles as plants don’t provide muscle building nutrition.
Fact — Many athletes are on plant-based diet and they are winning the games on a whirlwind. Such as, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Meagan Duhamel, Diana Taurasi, Constantin Preis, etc.

4.     Myth — Vegan diet is only about eating salads.
Fact — No, vegan diet is also about whole grains, fruits, desserts, legumes, lentils, curries and so on.

5.     Myth — Vegan diet is mainly low fat.
Fact — Vegan diet can be high fat too, depending on the food items you are putting in your plate.

6.     Myth — Vegan diet is not suitable for children.
Fact — In fact, research showed that children can digest vegan diet pretty easily and get enough nutrition. National Institute of Health (NIH) also declared that vegan diet in children is not an issue. It offers the same benefits and growth without any physical or mental illness. If required, you can add supplements in your children’s diet with a doctor’s prescription.

7.     Myth — Vegans can’t eat out at the restaurants.
Fact — Nowadays, seeing the popularity of vegan diet all over the world, you will find many vegan restaurants. You can also customise your menu at any other restaurants and can strictly mention to the chef that you are vegan.

8.     Myth — All the essential nutrients are not available in vegan diet.
Fact — Vegan nutrition is healthy if you are involving yourself into mindful eating. Close chances are for the vegans to have Vitamin B12 deficiency, which can be balanced with supplements. Even meat and fish eaters also get lot of deficiency in their body.

9.     Myth — Vegan food is boring and bland.
Fact — Vegan food can be delicious and spicy depending on the level of spices you can handle. You can add green chillies, red chillies, smoked paprika powder, jalapeños, habanero, chipotle paste if you want.

10.     Myth — Vegan diet is just like vegetarian diet, hence no difference.
Fact — Vegetarianism diet abstains you from eating eggs, meat and fish. But vegetarians consume animal milk and cheese. But veganism abstains you from eating anything and everything which comes from animals.
